Grandparent’s Day: Love, Care And Rhubarb Cake

We all love our grandparents, right? But there’s a special day on the calendar just for them – Grandparent’s Day. It’s a day full of love and fun, but why do we celebrate it? What makes it so important?

We know our grandparents are special, they give us treats, tell us stories, and always make us feel loved. But Grandparent’s Day is more than just saying ‘thank you’ for the cookies.

It’s a chance to show them how much we care, our way of saying ‘you matter to us’. It’s a day for us to make them feel as loved as they make us feel every day. So, let’s look at why celebrating Grandparent’s Day is a big deal. And why it’s a day we should all get behind.

The origins of Grandparent’s Day

Ever wondered how Grandparent’s Day started? It’s thanks to a grandma named Marian McQuade who wanted a special day for all grandparents. She started campaigning in 1970, and by 1979, it became an official US holiday, always celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

The celebration isn’t just a US thing. In the UK, it’s the first Sunday in October. And in Estonia, it’s the second Sunday of September, a date set in 2010 by Parliament. Fun fact: Mother’s and Father’s Day are celebrated also on second Sundays .

The day’s all about learning from our grandparents and cherishing the time with them. And that’s why we keep celebrating it year after year.

Why do we need Grandparent’s Day?

Well, grandparents often play a major role in raising us, not just spoiling us with goodies and tales. In 2018, about 2.7 million US grandparents were raising grandkids—that’s 1 in 24 adults!

This special day is more than just celebrating—it’s also about recognizing their hard work and dedication. Whether they’re primary caregivers or just a support pillar, their love profoundly shapes us. That’s why Grandparent’s Day is essential.

For adult grandchildren

Once we grow up, our relationship with our grandparents often changes. We may not see them as often as we used to, but the bond remains. As grown-up grandkids, we’ve got a special chance to show our grandparents just how much we really appreciate them, you know, in a more grown-up kind of way. Here’s a couple of ideas for you:

  1. Organize a family gathering: Nothing says “I love you” more than dedicating your time. Organize a get-together with all the family members. It will not only make them happy, but it’s a great way to strengthen family bonds. Spending time together is priceless.
  2. Reminiscing sessions: Go through old photo albums or home videos together. Your grandparents will enjoy a walk down memory lane, and you might hear some stories from the past you haven’t heard before!
  3. Tech help: Offer to help them with technology. Be it setting up a new phone or teaching them how to video call, your patience and willingness to assist will surely be appreciated.

No matter what you do, the key is to make them feel cherished and important. Remember, it’s the thought that counts.

For young grandchildren

But what about the young ones? Even if you’re small, you can make a big difference in your grandparents’ day. There’s a special bond between grandparents and grandchildren, filled with endless love and fun. Here are a few ways you can make your grandparents feel special:

  1. Grandparents Play Day: Organize a day of fun games you and your grandparents can play together. They might have some cool games from when they were kids to share with you!
  2. Homemade Gifts: Create a great project like a homemade card or artwork. This will not only show your love but also give them something to proudly display at home.
  3. Story Time: Ask your grandparents to tell you a story from their childhood. They’ll love sharing, and you’ll love listening!

Remember, it’s not about big, fancy gestures. It’s about showing your endless love and making them feel like the most important people in the world.

Socks for Grandparent’s Day: warm, cozy and caring gift

Socks for a such occasion? Well, they might not sound like the most exciting gift, but trust me, they’re perfect for Grandparent’s Day! Here’s why:

Firstly, let’s talk about warm socks. Everyone loves warm feet, right? And as we age, keeping toasty can get a bit trickier. So, gifting your grandparents a pair of warm socks means you’re literally wrapping them up in comfort and love. Plus, they’re very practical for those chilly nights!

Then, we’ve got the comfort socks for men and women (without elastic). These babies are all about ease and comfort. The lack of elastic means they won’t be too tight or leave any uncomfortable marks, especially for grandparents who might have circulation issues.

So yeah, socks might seem simple, but they’re like a hug for your grandparents’ feet. They’re cozy, caring, and totally a good call for a Grandparent’s Day gift!

Grandma’s rhubarb cake recipe

Ready for some baking magic? We’re diving into one of grandma’s classic recipes that’ll whisk you right back to your childhood. It’s her famous rhubarb cake – sweet, tangy, and oh-so-delicious. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get started on this beloved family gem! (NB! If you have run out of rhubarb at home, you can confidently replace it with apples – the cake will be just as good!)

Let’s get started! We’ll need:

For the dough

  • 100 g of butter
  • 85 g of sugar (1 dl, you can also use brown sugar)
  • 50 g of 20% sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 180 g of wheat flour (3 dl)
  • 1 tsp of baking powder

For the filling

  • 250 g of 20% sour cream
  • 4 tbsp of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp of vanilla sugar

For the topping

  • 4-5 stalks of rhubarb
  • Brown sugar

Preparation

  1. Whisk the room-temperature butter with sugar until the mixture becomes creamy.
  2. Add the sour cream, egg, and flour mixed with baking powder, and mix all the ingredients into a uniform dough. The dough’s consistency should be soft but not too liquid.
  3. Press the dough into a greased 24 cm diameter springform pan on the bottom and sides.
  4. To continue, mix the filling ingredients together – sour cream, sugar, egg, and vanilla sugar. Pour the filling into the prepared form.
  5. Peel the rhubarb stalks and cut them into pieces. Cover the filling with chopped rhubarb and sprinkle with some Demerara sugar to create a nice crispy layer.
  6. Bake the cake in a 200-degree oven in the middle for about 30 minutes until the dough has turned golden and the filling has set.
  7. Let the layered cake cool slightly in the form, then slide it carefully onto the cake stand.
  8. Tips and suggestions: Young rhubarb stalks don’t need peeling – cutting with a sharp knife is sufficient. When pressing the dough, use floured hands and leave the edges a bit thinner to avoid excessive rising. For the best result, choose medium-sized rhubarb stalks, about 400-500 g.

We’re sure that this recipe will bring joy and tasty moments to your Grandparent’s Day celebration. Share the love and enjoy the delicious charm of grandma’s rhubarb cake!

Happy Grandparent’s day!
